Jay Emerson, Student, Boatbuilder, Entrepreneur

Jay Emerson, new WBA member and a professional boat builder and restorer from Emerson Bay Boatworks, Pottsboro, TX, gave an informative presentation on the Northwest School of Wooden Boating at the May Meeting of the WBA.

Jay was a student there, graduating a few years ago after obtaining a two-year degree in the craft.

A current project at NWSWB, Port Townsend, WA.

Following a 16-minute video on the school, Jay fielded questions from the membership on various materials and techniques he uses in the construction and restoration of wooden boats. Thanks, Jay!

White Willis Restoration Gets Rathbun-Restored Johnson Outboard

When Chip Rathbun first looked into the gnawed wiring and corroded metal of Lew White's '56 Johnson 30 horse outboard, he thought he might scrap the motor. But Lew was intent on having the motor that came with the boat

restored, so Chip went the extra mile and did a fabulous job bringing the Johnson back to better than new.

This rare Willis boat will be a flagship for our Club in a static display at the Corinthian Sailing Club at the White Rock Centennial. See more photos!

In Lucas, Marc and Mark Make Grand Prix Progress

Below, Marc Hill measures for the next plank to be fastened to the bottom of his '68 Chris-Craft Grand Prix. Bilge Pump has erroneously been reporting that these boats are Super Sports, and although the hulls are similar, the boats are definitely Grand Prix.

Mark Wilson is just a few planks behind Hill, having completed the 5200-sealed plywood layer of his bottom and having fastened a garboard and second plank on his Grand Prix. You can find both guys out at the Lucas Shop on any given Saturday, but neither one gets overtime pay!

Next Monthly Meeting is JUNE 17 AT RAY HARVEY'S, Don't Miss It!

Join us at the at the home of Ray and Carol Harvey, 8027 Inwood Road, Dallas 75208, on FRIDAY, JUNE 17 at 7 p.m. for the next monthly meeting of the WBA. We'll have a brief business meeting before our Summer Kickoff Party begins, to finalize details of the White Rock Centennial (June 24-26), and putting the finishing touches on the Ride 'n Show at Lake Ray Hubbard (Aug. 26-28). The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on FRIDAY JUNE 17. There will be no meeting at Midway Point in June.

Shop Talk and Musings:

August 26-28 will be here before you know it! This year's Ride 'n Show will take place on the docks of Rockwall on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard, August 26-28. We're talking with Scott Self about a club cruise on the 40-foot wooden catamaran, Sea Wolf. We've found the best way to book rooms is on-line, at the Hilton Bella Harbor. Group rates do not apply, so if you're looking for a deal, try one of the online reservation services. Make your reservations now, the hotel plans on selling out that weekend!

Special thanks and a hat tip to Mark Wilson, who has parlayed his membership at the Dallas Corinthian Sailing Club on Lake Lewisville into a day of fun on the lake for the WBA on June 11. Mark himself will be cooking our lunch. He's really gone out of his way to help this event happen for us, so we sure hope you'll be there!!

And, finally:

Please take a look in the shed or garage for the leftover parts or other saleable items you can donate to the club. Bring them to any WBA meeting, or contact Phil Wolff at myoldboats@gmail.com for pickup.
