WBA Meeting Minutes
September 20th, 2007
The September meeting of 2007 was called to order at 7:00PM by President David Kanally at the Midway Point Restaurant. A short video from the Ride ‘N Show event prepared by David Kanally was shown. We then moved into reports:
Treasurer's Report - Phil Wolff: Treasury account balance is $2,651.36.
Membership Report – Mark Webster: Nothing to report. 19 in attendance: 16 members, 3 guests.
Secretary's Report – Richard Haug: Nothing to report. Previous meeting minutes approved.
Vice President's Report - Bob Van Guilder: Noting to report.
Project Reports – Robin McGeorge:
· Troy Marshal has his 1954 Sportsman in the shop to fix it up and sell it. The engine started up with an old carburetor and runs just fine. Troy just purchased a 1948 22ft. Hacker triple project.
· Jerry Foltyn’s can almost see the end to his Mercury project and it is going to be a beautiful boat.
· Robin McGeorge had Jim Wolf out on Lake Lavon to tweak the engine on Black Beauty which is now running “unbelievably” well. The boat will be listed it on ebay and they’ll see how it does.
· David Kanally’s sailboat still needs access to a ramp at Lake Grapevine to reinstall the keel. David has been working on the boat above decks for 2-3 hours a day. The brightwork has been redone and he has replaced some plywood with solid mahogany.
· Jim Wolf gave a short tutorial on Pertronix Ignition installation and the importance of making sure that ignition system gets a full 12 volts by making sure there is no (valence) resistor in line to draw down the current flow.
Please see Robin McGeorge to discuss your potential project and scheduling shop time. There may be shop space available in the coming months.
New Business/Updates/Events:
Classic on the Lake event for September 22nd at Pier 121 with the Classic Car Club. The Amphicar club was also invited. Launching will start at 8:30AM and the show time will run from 10am until 3pm. We currently have 6-7 boats confirmed and we would like to have 10 on hand for the event.
State Fair Event: October 8th. The Corral has been moved and enlarged. The Classic Chassis Car Club prefers to be there on Sunday the 7th and not on a week day but they left it open to their members to return on Monday and that we would welcome them in the Corral. Passes are forthcoming but arrangements will be made to pick them up at the gate as well. The boats must be in place by 9am and they cannot be moved until 6pm. All are encouraged to participate as there is usually a good audience, allot of foot traffic and many old boat stories told.
Hill Country Show sponsored by the Southwest chapter of the ACBS will be October 12th through the 14th in Austin. The venue from last year has changed from the Horseshoe Bay Resort to the Lake LBJ Marina. There is additional information on the SW ACBS Website. It is a highly recommended show with over 52 boats participating last year. Reasonable accommodations are available in nearby Marble Falls.
Annual WBA Holiday Party is scheduled for December 8th which is the second Saturday in December. Once again it will be hosted by the Kanally’s in Coppell. Please mark your calendars!
Upcoming Meeting Programs: Mike Gomes will be presenting on Gar Wood and his boats for the October 18th meeting.
September Meeting Presentation:
Bob Adair and Lewis White tag teamed on their experiences doing design and quality engineering for Chrysler Boats during the ‘60’s and ‘70’s. They also had the manager of Product Engineering & Design, Jack Gempel, in attendance to add to their stories of working in the local Plano facility which was once the Lone Star Boat Company. Bob showed us photos of the design process and a few sketches of boats he would have liked to have seen which were not necessarily what the executives in Detroit were interested in producing. They competed directly with Glastron and offered a range of boats from 14ft up to 23ft in both inboard and outboard configurations. Some of the engines used were the Chrysler Slant 6, the 318 and in the sport and jet boats the Chrysler 340. Many of these models were tested in nearby Lake Lavon. We also saw the entire process for the Hydro Vee boat and the process of making a “splash mold” out of wood from which production molds were made. They also produced and tested trailers for boats locally as well. Bob and Lew will both tell you the motto they used at Chrysler was “sink your savings in a Chrysler boat”.
No new business was presented from the floor.
The meeting was then brought to a close at 8:53PM.
