WBA Meeting Minutes

July 19th, 2007

The July meeting of 2007 was called to order at 7:00PM by President David Kanally at the Midway Point Restaurant.  We moved immediately into reports:

Treasurer's Report - Phil Wolff: Treasury account balance is $2,285.05.  The balance does not include the funds offered by the Southwest Chapter of the ACBS.

Membership Report – Mark Webster:  No new members to report.

Secretary's Report – Richard Haug: Nothing to report.

Vice President's Report - Bob Van Guilder: Nothing to report.

Project Reports – Robin McGeorge:

·         Jerry Foltyn’s Mercury project is coming along as he makes decisions regarding windshield placement and installing other hardware on his boat.

·         Robin McGeorge has continued to work on Black Beauty.  Two coats of black paint have been added and some of the hardware has been re-installed on the boat.

·         Richard Haug’s Shepherd is about to go into the shop.  Most of the hardware has been removed and the engine will need to be pulled prior to turning the boat over.

·         David Kannally’s sailboat has the topsides painted and the mast stripped including the main sail track.  The mast is made of sitka spruce and David has been working on filling some of the surface cracks that were present.

·         Phil Wolf continues to work on his ’58 Century Coronado.  The 331 Cadillac engine is out and has had issues with the starter.  The Coronado is almost ready to be flipped over.

Please see Robin McGeorge to discuss your potential project and scheduling shop time.  There may be shop space available in the coming months.

New Business/Updates/Events:

Upcoming Events:

National Marina Day will be August 11th and we are invited back again to Joe Poole Lake and the Lynn Creek Marina. Brochure and map were provided and will also be available via e-mail.  The lake is only 3.5ft higher than normal.

Ride ‘n Show – Aug. 25th & 26th :

  • David Kanally presented details on the current state of the docks in and around Sneaky Pete’s.  The photos showed how high the lake was in relation to the docks at Sneaky Pete’s. There is an alternate dock in place with plenty of parking available that we can use for the event.
  • Room and Food: David reported that previously we paid $30 per person but this year Sneaky Pete’s is staying tight on a room charge plus the food which is about $80-90 per person.  We have several options including:  using the facility and come and go for lunch; using the facility and go elsewhere for the banquet, or do the banquet al Al Kroemer’s Friday evening and continue with Sneaky Pete’s for everything else.
  • Alternate sites were presented and discussed:
    • Cedar Creek Lake is available with a nice dock/display area and party room facility.  Local lodging is available on-site as well as at the local Best Western.  The marina is roughly 50 miles from downtown Dallas.
    • Pier 121 was considered but there was some reluctance on their part to ask for slip availability and the food facilities were not up to standard for the event.
    • Joe Poole Lake was also contacted but there are schedule conflicts at Lynne Creek marina and proximity to the National Marina Day event also plays into the decision to not hold Ride ‘N Show there.
    • Pier 144 on Lake Granbury seemed interested and could be a future event site.  There are 5-6 days slips and a 100 slip marina.  There are spots for mooring boats as well.  There is a room available that could be used for the banquet as well as a Riverboat that could be rented.  The marina is ¼ mile from downtown Granbury which has Bed & Breakfast facilities as well as regular hotels.  There is good exposure as there is public park next to the marina.  Next June there will be a local Hawaiian Tropic Contest that might make for an interesting event.

Opinions offered: Good future sites were identified but the feeling was that we should make Friday evening the focus at the Kroemer’s with the banquet given current time constraints to pull something together at an alternate site. Water release off of Lake Lewisville should also improve the high lake level over the next several weeks and possibly avoid the issue with shuttling people from the alternate launch site and Sneaky Pete’s.  By keeping the event at Sneaky Pete’s we will also avoid forcing those planning to attend from out-of-town from having to re-arrange their travel plans.

  • Saturday evening the Van Guilder’s have offered to host a cookout at their home on the lake.
  • We will need to send invitations out soon and look at on-line registration.  Maps will also need to be created for the get together at the Kramer’s Friday evening the 24th.
  • Sunday brunch will be pay-as-you-go at Sneaky Pete’s buffet with no commitment to them for the number of attendee’s.  We will need to also make sure everyone is aware of its availability after the Sunday morning run on the lake.
