WBA Meeting Minutes

February 15th, 2007

The first meeting of 2007 was called to order at 7:15PM by President David Kanally at the Midway Point Restaurant. We moved immediately into reports:

Vice President's Report - Bob Van Guilder: Nothing to report.

Treasurer's Report - Phil Wolff: Treasury account balance is $1,499.12. We are $.78 short of the minimum $1,500.00 account balance and Phil indicated that he would prefer to see us at the $2,000.00 mark at this time. We did overspend "a little" at the Banquet and we have also paid the annual insurance premium for 2007.

Secretary's Report – Richard Haug: Nothing to report.

Membership Report – Mark Webster: The new Directory is out and was distributed at the banquet. If anyone has not received one please let Mark know. Membership renewals are also being worked.

Project Reports – Robin McGeorge (in abstentia):

Troy Marshall’s Chris Craft 18ft Cavalier Project: Started this Fall with Robin as the project manager. Motor is out of the boat and the bilge has been painted. The fiberglass bottom has been refurbished. The most recent effort has been to replace the deck with planks and seems. The interior ceiling boards have also been replaced. The seats and dash are being completed and stain is a couple of weeks away from being applied to decks and hull. Troy is working towards an April finish date and a first showing at Keels and Wheels.

Mark Webster's '73 Chris Craft XK22: Roy Schindler has completed the fiberglass work on the hull. The outdrive is ready to be mounted while the LT1 engine is being finished at the restorer. Mark has also completed new mahogany interior work and expects to be in the water in June.

Jerry Folyn's Mercury: 14 coats of gleaming, buffed and polished varnish are on the boat. Jerry says the varnish is done.

Dave Kanally's sailboat: In assessing the work to be done a soft spot was found in the prow along with major rot in the gripe described as a "big piece of daylight". Dave is getting expert assistance in refashioning the gripe and parts of the keel where it joins the gripe from Lewis White.

New Business/2007 Planning:

The Lucas Shop: This continues to be a key differentiator for the WBA. We have seen a changing of the guard and other members are taking up the call in maintaining our responsibilities with the shop. The financial responsibility breaks out at roughly $900.00 per quarter for the space while gas and electricity runs roughly $75.00/month.

One point of discussion was with regard to establishing some mechanism for queuing up to work on your boat. The best method today is to consult with Robin McGeorge directly and he will work the schedule to get your project work in.

Parts/ebay/Web Site Activity:

Phil Wolff reports that we need to step up our ebay activities and as in support of that April 14th was designated as parts day at the Lucas Shop. We will be inventorying, organizing and photo-ing parts on-hand for ebay sales. This should help boost our operating balance.

Phil is also exploring Craig's list possibilities as it has a local pull and he has had some success with it as well. Phil also suggests we think larger than just boat parts for auctions as well. If there some items you own that you are thinking of disposing of, call Phil to see if we can get some auction value out of them.

The website continues to be a draw for the WBA as well. Phil would like to work on developing a "Featured Member Article and Pictures" section. Please contact Phil if you would like to help with a profile.

Also a suggestion was made to explore extending our reach by posting links to other wood boat sites. Troy Marshall volunteered to work with Phil on developing a list of candidates to approach.

Meeting Program Lists:

If you are interested in doing a presentation, David has the "Lifesavers" program list open for 9 dates in 2007. The remaining dates that are now available March, April, May, June, July and November. As we are meeting at the Midway Point we will not need the refreshments volunteers that we have had in the past. Some suggested topics for presentation:

–Demonstration on specific repair techniques–Demonstration on fine varnishing techniques–A potential new member who has a boat-related interest (Sea Scouts, former boatbuilder, etc.)–Corps of Engineers representative on Lake Management

New Business:

Charity boat Project: Brad Bowen was with us for this meeting after finding us on the Web last year asking for some assistance with a 1941 Double Cabin Cruiser. Some of you may remember some discussion last year about this boat that was originally sold on Lake Dallas and was moved to Lake Granbury where it has languished for a number of years. The boat was purchased and is currently on the hard at a property in Little Elm looking for some TLC to get her back in the water as vehicle to benefit the community in charitable ways. Brad is looking for some help to do a survey to determine what is needed to get the boat lake worthy. He has a mechanic lined up for her engines. He really would like some help from any members so inclined to build a scope of work to help him determine how the boat should best be restored to service.

WBA Business Cards: See Dave Kanally for generic cards provided for distribution to anyone who expresses interest in the club. It is an easy mechanism to generate interest and provide details to those we meet at shows.

Boat for Sale: Walter Hill reports that a former WBA member, Paul Nix, has passed away and his 26ft Chris Craft is up for sale at Lake Ray Hubbard. For those that remember, this boat was formerly owned by Leroy Newkirk. Give Walter a call if you have questions.
