Bring Your Favorite Person to Guest Night, Nov. 18!

Get ready for a great guest night at the regular NOVEMBER meeting of the WBA, Nov. 18, 2010 at the Midway Point Restaurant.

Guy McCollum, WBA member and wooden boating advocate, will be presenting his experiences at the ACBS Annual International Boat Show in Michigan.

By Guy's account, this was one of the largest and finest boat shows ever, with 128 boats on display in the water and over 40 on land. So bring your spouse, your significant other, your BFF, or your lonesome neighbor and join us for the Guest Night meeting on November 18. Dinner begins at 5:30, the Club picks up the first ten bucks of guests' dinners.

Hill Country Show Picture Perfect!

Few people remember two nicer days of weather than Lake LBJ saw on October 15-16 for the 28th Annual Austin/Hill Country Wooden Boat Show at the Horseshoe Bay Club. Above, "Rose", Rick and Bestsy Schaffer's Hutchinson, took Best of Show.

Above, Scott Reichardt's daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren make memories in real time in the '39 Gar Wood Utility that Scott recently acquired from Troy Marshall and Robin McGeorge. Watch a video of the show. See a slideshow of the show.

Webster Talk on Speedy Racers Revs Up Club

We can always count on a well-studied and concisely presented topic from Mark Webster, and the October exposé on Classic Speedboats from 1945-1962 was no exception.

Showing the evolution of hull design and advances in engine technology, Mark traced the thrilling progress of record-setting race boats over nearly two decades following WWII.

Mark used the book pictured at left as the source of his presentation. You could do a similar presentation in 2011, based on the other two books Mark has, covering the decades before the War and after 1962!

The boats were not only beautiful, but were also feats of nautical architecture genius. Thanks, Mark for an entertaining and informative presentation.

Lucas Shop Update: Slow But Sure

A quick trip to Lucas just before press time revealed progress on the 6-banger engine from Troy and Robin's new project, a Chris Craft Capri. Robin's been loving up the engine with some fresh paint, new gaskets, and some TLC. Craftsmanship and care always come together in Robin's work.

Marc Hill's boat shows some signs of human presence, with chines in place and plywood pattern boards being fitted to determine the size and shape of the mahogany planks that will eventually cover the hull frames. Mark Wilson's twin Super Sport is at a similar stage of progress.
