March, 2012

Register for Keels & Wheels Today!

Keels & Wheels, the premier boat and car show of the Southwest, is just around the corner, May 5-6, 2012. It's time to register for the event. Let's get as many WBA members and boats participating as possible. March 1 is the deadline for getting your boat listed in the event program!

The WBA will again be helping with the launch ramp duties and judging. To sign up for ramp duty, call Robin McGeorge at 972-742-7496, and to be a judge, send a note to Bob Van Guilder. Let's make this event the best Keels & Wheels ever. More at http://keels-wheels.com.

Members-Only Tool Auction March 31 at Lucas Shop!

Recently, WBA member and benefactor Mike Gomes donated a substantial number of hand and power tools to the WBA. Some of the tools and supplies that were donated will be put to use as shared resources at the Lucas shop. But most of the items will be offered for sale to current WBA members only at an auction sale at the shop on Saturday, March 31 from 10a.m.-12 noon.

A full inventory with photos of the items will be emailed to the membership in the coming week. You must be current on you 2012 dues to participate. Need to pay your dues? Check with Marc Hill for instructions. Details of the silent-auction event will be sent with the inventory. Questions? Contact David Kanally.

"Two Guys" a Big Hit

It appears that we have a winner in the new meeting place of the WBA, Two Guys from Italy. The February planning meeting was full to capacity with 28 members and guests present. Thanks for such a great turnout, and let's keep the momentum going. Two Guys have decided to put us in their larger conference room going forward, so even with big turnouts, we'll have plenty of elbow room.

The meeting's agenda included laying out the calendar of events for the 2012 season. Details may be found in the minutes of the meeting already emailed to the membership. The biggest open item is the date for the annual Ride 'n Show at Rockwall, which we're trying to set for early October. Stay tuned! Our web site calendar of events will be updated as we go along.

Lucas Shop is Chris-Craft Crazy!

Above, Robin McGeorge fills the hydraulic transmission of the Chris-Craft 327 that he and Troy Marshall are restoring. Below, Marc Hill can see the reflection of the overhead lights in the brilliant white finish on the bottom of his '68 Grand Prix.

Above, the Chris-Craft 327 has new shiny valve covers to pimp the ride of whichever captain is lucky enough to acquire the engine once Troy and Robin finish the restoration. Below, Mark Wilson prepares his frames and battens for the last few side planks on his '68 Grand Prix.

Next Monthly Meeting March 15, 2012. Don't miss it!

Come check out our new meeting location, Two Guys from Italy at 11637 Webb Chapel Road, just south of Forest Road. Our program will be provided by the always knowledgeable and informative Seb Borrello. His presentation is entitled, "Pardon My Sawdust", and promises to be worth your attention. It will be about the restoration effort on the 48 foot runabout Pardon Me. This restoration is underway at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY and will be completed by July 2012. Pardon Me, known as "the world's largest runabout" was built in 1948 by Hutchinson Boat Works.

Join us for a light meal and moderate libation at 5:30 p.m. at Two Guys from Italy prior to the meeting.

Shop Talk and Musings:

Looks like we're closing in on the date of October 12-13 for our annual Ride 'n Show on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard on the beautiful docks at Bella Harbor. The perfect venue will now be matched by perfect weather. The prior weekend is already blocked with the massive Toyota Triathalon. Later in the month conflicts with boating events elsewhere in the state. Before we cast this date in stone, we want to hear from you whether we are committing some kind of cultural crime by scheduling this event on the same weekend as the Texas-OU game. Our informal polling indicates that it's not a huge issue with most of us, and so long as there's a big screen TV in the hotel bar, we're OK. This is one of those "speak now or forever hold your peace" kind of moments. Let me know! 940-395-2742.

And, finally:

Please take a look in the shed or garage for the leftover parts or other saleable items you can donate to the club. Bring them to any WBA meeting, or contact David Kanally at david@historywithheart.com for pickup.
